Dear Resident

You may be aware of a disease called Trichomonosis (not avian flu), which particularly affects finches, but can affect all birds. We have had recent instances of this disease in Fairlight.

As Trich is spread orally at popular feeding and watering sites, please be vigilant and clean all bird feeders with a diluted disinfectant (eg Milton) weekly, change their positions frequently to prevent a build-up of ground food spillage; and scrub all water bowls with a hard brush weekly and renew water on a daily basis.

For more information on how to reduce the spread of Trich and spot its signs, you may go the RSPB website:

http://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/read-and-learn/helping-birds/disease/disease-garden-birds.aspx

or the BTO (British Organisation for Ornithologists) website:

https://www.bto.org/volunteer-surveys/gbw/gardens-wildlife/garden-birds/disease/trichomonosis

Thank you,

Shelly and Rob Swain
